[ In taking his time and moving so loudly to sit at the top of the stairs Cambridge had been making a very calculating move: he wanted Oxford to know exactly where he was and to give him enough to time do whatever secret things he had to do downstairs before emerging. Cambridge was fully prepared to sit for as long as it took; face grim with determination he remained quietly perching on the top stair in nothing but his underwear as Oxford pads around in the study.
As Oxford slips in to view Cambridge remains exactly where he is at the top of the stairs. If Oxford wants to close the distance then he can, but Cambridge wants it all to be on Oxford's terms. Cambridge has never really been passive in his whole life but now he's starting to learn that passive doesn't always equate to being a pushover. It just pays to be less demanding, sometimes. He leans over his elbows, hands clasped lightly between his knees, and only raises his eyebrows in response to Oxford's words. He doesn't quite appreciate the flippant response but he bites his tongue, only allowing the little flare of annoyance to go so far as to make him pointedly silent in response to Oxford's words.
He sits there, ever so quietly, eyes searching for Oxford's in an attempt to hold his gaze. The expectant silence speaks volumes. ]
